Documentation as a Tool for Heritage Protection

Tunis, ALECSO Headquarters, 2–4 December 2017

The third Protecting the Past conference was held in Tunis (Tunisia) between 2–4 December 2017 at the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organisation (ALECSO) Headquarters. The conference in Tunis followed a four-week training event organised by EAMENA and funded by the British Council’s Cultural Protection Fund for 20 heritage professionals and students from Libya and Tunisia on the applications of aerial image interpretation and remote sensing to archaeological analysis and heritage management.

Purpose and Programme

The purpose of this conference, which was entitled Documentation as a Tool for Heritage Protection, was to bring together international, regional, and local experts to explore how digital and on-the-ground documentation may address the challenges facing cultural heritage. While the focus of the conference was on Tunisia and Libya, broader regional issues were also discussed.

The conference also provided an opportunity for Tunisian and Libyan stakeholders trained in the EAMENA methodology of digital documentation via remote sensing to present their projects and feedback.
